Following with the post that Sergio wrote two days ago, Pon una app en tu vida, I would like to ponder the good and the bad points of running with our cellphone tied to the arm. It´s something that I really hate, but still there´s a reason which makes me think that it´s quite good taking it with us. Let´s start with the possitive arguments:
-Security: This is the main argument for me to carry the cell phone while running. I love to get a little bit "lost" and far from the city when I run. This way I get more relaxed, but I´ve already had the experience of getting hurt out of Bilbao still with all the way back home to run. Probably some of you will think that some years ago there were no cell phones, but come on...times has changed and nowadays it´s something that allows us to be safe.
-Statistics: If we love runner´s science (this concept will be explained on my next post) there are lots of apps which save our progress, so we can see how fast we´ve run. I´ve used one of those apps before my first half-marathon.
-Landscapes: Even if these days I´m running in asphalt, I´m very anxious for the winter to come. That will be the moment to take out my trailrunning shoes, and start running up to the hills stepping over mud and snow! Top of the hills usually brings great views, beautiful sunsets...and if taken more than one or two shots of those moments.
Now the negative points of running with a cell phone:
-Discommodity: I run because I feel free when I do it. I like to feel comfortable, and that´s why I love summer more than winter, because during summer I don´t need to wear so much clothes. This doesn´t mean that I´m thinking about running nude...Anyway, what I want to say is that the less things I wear, the more comfortable I feel, and the cell phone doesn´t help in this fact. Moreover, after some kilometres I usually feel how my left arm starts to get anesthetized. Not comfortable at all.
-Ill-time calls: I think that getting a call is quite possitive, because it means that something is thinking about you. That´s for sure, but usually when I run, I´m looking for getting "out of the world", and carrying a cell phone keeps you always "inside the world". That´s something that didn´t happen a few years ago...
-Statistics: If we love runner´s science (this concept will be explained on my next post) there are lots of apps which save our progress, so we can see how fat we´re after Christmas. But after my GPS failed, I didn´t want to lose more time under the rain or in the middle of a cold night.
Even if I hate it, I run with it. I only leave it at home when I run with someone else who carries his cell phone. And what about you? Do you run alone or with your cell phone?
